Evans Wadongo: MwangaBora Lamp

In 2004 at the tender age of 19, Evans Wadongo took it upon himself to create an alternative to the unhealthy and often dangerous kerosene lamps and firelights used by villages like his in rural Africa. The enterprising Kenyan engineer developed the MwangaBora lamp, a fume-less light source made of 50% recycled materials that has since been widely distributed throughout the countrysides of Kenya and Malawi. To further the production and distribution of such lamps, NYC’s Friedman Benda gallery is hosting a three-day charitable selling exhibition—designed by fashion designerReed Krakoff—showing an edition of 1,000 solar lamps designed entirely by Wadongo.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has announced that the agency is considering whether to begin covering costs of gender confirmation surgery for transgender people.

Without coverage, the cost of surgery can exceed $50,000. Around 48 million people in the country are covered by Medicare. The CMS is reportedly seeking comments from the public about whether or not to change its coverage.

The center states that it “considers all public comments, and is particularly interested in clinical studies and other scientific information relevant to the topic under review. Surgical Treatment for Gender Identity Disorder is currently noncovered under the Medicare Part A and Part B programs. The existing policy, which became effective in 1981, states that transsexual surgery is considered experimental. Please note that we are making an administrative change to the NCD title under this reconsideration to reflect current medical terminology. The new title for Section 140.3 will be Surgical Treatment for Gender Identity Disorder.”

Holy harpsichord.

We know J.S. Bach was a genius composer. Certainly among the top two or three that have ever lived by most measures. Even knowing that, I was not prepared for the awesomeness you are about to see.

This is the first canon from Bach’s Musical Offering, known as the “crab canon”. The first level of awesome is when you find out that it was designed to be played backwards and forwards. But lots of people have done that … big deal, right?

Then you find out that it was written to be played backwards and forwards at the same time. That’s pretty amazing, but again, since it’s not that long I wouldn’t classify it as an Earth-shattering epiphany.

BUT THEN … graphic artist Jos Leys (who made the video), show how this Bach piece is basically the musical version of a Möbius strip.

Mind. Blown.
